About BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a person's weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. BMI is an inexpensive and easy screening method for weight category—underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity.
Limitations of BMI
BMI is a useful measurement for most people over 18 years old. But it is only an estimate and doesn't take into account age, ethnicity, gender, body composition, and other important factors:
- It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build
- It may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle
- Pregnant women should not use standard BMI calculations
